Mormonism and Exaltation

2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 says,

Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God.
This particular passage is a great exposition on some of the characteristics of the chief anti-Christ: self-exalting, claims divinity, and sits on God’s throne. Interestingly enough, from primary school to seminary to institute classes, the Mormon Church teaches its members to become self-exalting, divine, and eventually sit on a throne as a God. This is just one more example why Christians do not accept Mormonism as true Christianity. If these teachings aren’t blasphemy, I don’t know what is. For example:

Doctrine and Covenants 132:19-22

19 And again, verily I say unto you, if a man marry a wife by my word, which is
my law, and by the new and everlasting covenant, ...Ye shall come forth in the first resurrection; ...and shall inherit thrones, kingdoms, principalities, and powers, dominions, ...and they shall pass by the angels, and the gods, which are set there, to their exaltation and glory in all things, as hath been sealed upon their heads, which glory shall be a fulness and a continuation of the seeds forever and ever. 20 Then shall they be gods, because they have no end; therefore shall they be from everlasting to everlasting, because they continue; then shall they be above all, because all things are subject unto them. Then shall they be gods, because they have all power, and the angels are subject unto them. 21 Verily, verily, I say unto you, except ye abide my law ye cannot attain to this glory. 22 For strait is the gate, and narrow the way that leadeth unto the exaltation and continuation of the lives, and few there be that find it, because ye receive me not in the world neither do ye know me.
Gospel Principles, p. 243

Some of the blessings we can enjoy for eternity are as follows... we can be
exalted as God and receive a fulness of joy.
Gospel Principles, p. 302

Blessings of exaltation... They will become gods... They will have everything that our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ have - all power, glory, dominion, and knowledge

Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., Doctrines of Salvation, Vol.2, p.48

The Father has promised us that through our faithfulness we shall be blessed
with the fulness of his kingdom. In other words we will have the privilege of
becoming like him. To become like him we must have all the powers of
godhood
; thus a man and his wife when glorified will have spirit children who eventually will go on an earth like this one we are on and pass through the same kind of experiences, being subject to mortal conditions, and if faithful, then they also will receive the fulness of exaltation and partake of the same blessings. There is no end to this development; it will go on forever. We will become gods and have jurisdiction over worlds, and these worlds will be peopled by our own offspring. We will have an endless eternity for this. [This implies that we will also receive worship from our spirit children who populate these worlds.]
History of the Church, Vol. 6, p. 302-317

Here, then, is eternal life—to know the only wise and true God; and you have got to learn how to be gods yourselves, and to be kings and priests to God, the same as all gods have done before you, namely, by going from one small degree to another, and from a small capacity to a great one; from grace to grace, from exaltation to exaltation, until you attain to the resurrection of the dead, and are able to dwell in everlasting burnings, and to sit in glory, as do those who sit enthroned in everlasting power. And I want you to know that God, in the last days, while certain individuals are proclaiming His name, is not trifling with you or me. … To inherit the same power, the same glory and the same exaltation, until you arrive at the station of a god, and ascend the throne of eternal power, the same as those who have gone before. My Father worked out His kingdom with fear and trembling, and I must do the same; and when I get my kingdom, I shall present it to My Father, so that He may obtain kingdom upon kingdom, and it will exalt Him in glory. He will then take a higher exaltation, and I will take His place, and thereby become exalted myself. So that Jesus treads in the tracks of His Father, and inherits what God did before; and God is thus glorified and exalted in the salvation and exaltation of all His children. It is plain beyond disputation, and you thus learn some of the first principles of the gospel, about which so much hath been said.
History of the Church, Vol. 6, p. 408, 409

I have more to boast of than ever any man had. I am the only man that has ever been able to keep a whole church together since the days of Adam. A large majority of the whole have stood by me. Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such a work as I. The followers of Jesus ran away from Him; but the Latter-day Saints never ran away from me yet...When they can get rid of me, the devil will also go.
Let me re-quote 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 to you,

Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God.

Thank you for your excellent breakdown of Biblical truths and Mormon teachings in your blogs.

My opinion is Mormonism is a made up religion of man. When I say made up by man, I mean, particularly males. With such a self contradictory system of doctrine why don't more women stand up against it? Women are smart. My wife chalenges my thinking all the time. I don't tell her she can't do that. I accept that she is able to identify truth for herslef and call me on things I say or think contrary to the truth. Oh that's right Mormons only allow men to be leaders in the church, and explain complex doctrine. Probably because they don't want women to really investigate the religion. But some do. And they find out things. And they stay quiet because of the tight control they find themselves overwhelmed in.

Mormonism teaches that to become a god a man must have many wives in this life. So now we know why mormon weddings take place inside a mormon church and no one but a Mormon can be allowed in. They probably recite those doctrines in the ceremonies and don't want anyone asking questions. And what sounds scary to me is these ceremonies we know about in which married couples are required to participate within the inner rooms of the church to achieve exaltation. Probably that's where the polygamy still is practiced.

Oh, all the poor misled people that are led astray in the teachings of Mormonism. If only they new the kinds of questions you put forth here. If they new the truth they could be spared all the mind games, and years of counseling to heal their fractured minds.

I know that officially the Mormon church abandoned the teaching of polygamy in 1890. But ex-mormons who've been high up in the church have said that sexual acts are part of those secret ceremonies held in the churches walls. A religion which mandates men to have lots of sex with lots of women? Tell me how is that denying your flesh it's desires, and bearing Christ-likeness? How is that putting other's needs before yours, and preferring your brother above yourself?

You're welcome. I'm not sure about the sexual favors inside the Temple, but you're right about polygamy being an essential doctrine. Btw, I also have another site at www.perfectrighteousness.com

I am a woman and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
I want you to know that I have my agency and I can do and say whatever it is I want to.
I also want you to know that polygamy is no longer practiced in the Church. Those that continue to practice are not members and have decided on their own to practice it.
As far as what goes on in the temples, there is nothing inappropriate that goes on. I know because I have gone and go frequently.
Thank you.

Ms. Anonymous,

I think you need to study Mormonism a little more and you'll find out that polygamy is still an important doctrine. Polygamy was temporarily stopped, but will continue in heaven. Read D&C 132. Also Brigham Young, and many other LDS prophets have said very clearly that polygamy is required for exaltation and will be continued in heaven.

In regards to the Temple, it depends on what you mean by inappropriate and how long you have visited the Temple. Before the 90's you performed "penalties" that included the sign of slitting your throat and belly if you disclosed Temple rituals. You also perform handshakes and other strange rituals that are taken straight from Massonry. Also, the black or blue apron that satan puts on in the lessoons has certain symbols on them, the square, compass and ruler that represent the powers of his priesthood. Did you notice that you have the same markings on your undergarments? I've seen it in person and it's undeniable. You can read all about it at www.utlm.org

*cough* We are to be heirs of God and Joint-heirs with Christ. Christ wants us to overcome and sit on his throne.

We are children of God.

What, exactly, does it mean to be a "Child of God"? An heir of God? Joint heir with Christ? To sit on Christ' throne? Did not Christ Himself say that "ye are gods?"

I'm sorry, but you are out to lunch on this one.

Anonymous,

You must be out to lunch, you're certainly out of context. In Jesus' dialogue with the Pharisees who was he refering to when he said "ye are gods"? Was he saying the sinful pharisees were gods? Do you honestly think that gods are sinful like the pharisees? That would be odd. The context refers to Psalm 82:6 which says "I have said, Ye [are] gods; and all of you [are] children of the most High. 82:7 But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes" Jesus isn't saying that men are gods, because gods obviously don't die like men. The verse was saying that the Judges of the land were like gods to the people because they are acting on behalf of God to administer justice, but according to verses 2-5 they blew it. Just like the pharisees blew it when they didn't recognize Jesus as God and wanted to stone a righteous man just like the evil judges in Psalm 82.

Also, to be an heir of somebody doesn't mean that you can become a God, it just means that you can have their stuff. D&C 132 was wrong by saying we can become gods with all power because only one God can have all power. To be joint heirs with Christ simply means that we will have access to all the things in the realm that Christ is in (heaven).

If we are litteral children of God as you might think then why do we have to become children of God? (John1:12) who are the children of the devil? (1 John 3:10) or the children of wrath? (Ephesians. 2:3). Are not these simply ways of stating somebodies spiritual status? Also where did God get his wife?

By the way, even if you become a "god" you will still be a human god. You will still be a man who is dependent upon the laws of nature, and all of the things by which you were dependent upon in order to become a God. That certainly isn't the kind of God who is God by nature as described in the Bible. So you my friend don't fit the mold to be God because you're not God by nature. See some posts here and here

Um, this website is very informing but it shouldn't be cruel.why would you want to smash someones beliefs if it makes them happy? Not many people will actually reach the highest celestial kingdom. To be blessed with the powers of God takes a lot of faith and most of us sinners will have a hard time being blessed with the highest glory. You would have to be near perfect. Anyone who can accomplish what the Lord asks of us being mere creatures with all the temptations of the devil would deserve an eternity with these gifts. Besides what do you think we do for all eternity be that we will not be married and have children and our families? Fly around, polish our haloes and twiddle our thumbs. Eternity is a long time I think the Lord will have work for us to do there as well. And the missionaries I have met with regard the Bible highly and 1 corinthians speaks of these glories, The Book of Mormon works with the Bible for the latter days which is full of abominations and needs the extra scripture. And why would the Lord send so many prophets and then just one day cut them off so there are no present day prophets to lead us in these dark times? Does not make sense to me. The Lord is a loving God and wouldn't allow His children to burn in hell just because they never heard of Christ. And why would Jesus only visit one place on this earth when there isn't telephones or communication as we have it today. Why would He allow the Americas to go without learning of Him and how to save their souls? Everyone has a right to opinion but maybe you go a little far with some of the things you say. And also when God flooded the earth and murdered all His children, sounds pretty human to me, as we are created in His image. God may not want us to think He makes mistakes, but getting angry with all your disobedient children and drowning them? Is that not human emotion? Something we would as humans be arrested for. Yes everything you say is very convincing, slandering the Mormons and their beliefs. Well what do you think is the one true church, with all your insight and time to research religions you don't even partake of.
